Does someone have ideas for this??

too many hoaxes, impersonators, trolls out there... we need an official center of information or some kind of "certificate" if you will (if that exists) that tells us that it's not a sabotage of their message(s). Again, I saw a site that is taking credit for being Anon, and it was not a pleasant one. Can someone please explain if anything is in place. PS I understand that Anon = anonymous and the point is to remain undisclosed... and that perhaps we're getting these trolls to sabotage them by the same ones who we are struggling against... so does anyone have an idea of how to get around this?

grammar sucks now that I reread it, but you get my point

Getting the truth aint easy. Sometimes checking out the facts can be very difficult, because of just one article spreading to dozens of different sources. I trust my gut. If you are suspicious of the info it is for a reason. A full decade online can really influence the way information is 'digested.'

I agree with janmarbol's sentiment, and agree with MundusVultDecipi's assessment. I've noticed that trolls have a pattern of being downright nasty, without offering reasoning or facts to substantiate their comments. So, that's a clue for some filtering, at least.

RE: an article spreading quickly on the web--recently, an article in The Bay Citizen misquoted Van Jones, with a disinforming connotation. I was astonished to discover, within 3 days, the misquote had been repeated in over 1800 news outlets and blogs, including places where one expects fact-checking.

  • janmarboljanmarbol November 2011 +1 -1
exactly... they expect that no one will fact-check. I've written "Democracy Now!" and hopefully they will respond.
  • janmarboljanmarbol November 2011 +1 -1
and that's true too, as Mundus says, "trusting your gut"
  • BrightestEyeBrightestEye November 2011 +1 -1
This is happening with Facebook also. Trolls hover the page with violent comments. We need to pull people from facebook to this site, and leave the trolls behind.
  • janmarboljanmarbol November 2011 +1 -1 (+1 / -0 )
YUP! they are rampant right now... they started a few days ago. I've noticed that. But when you see violent comments, etc., you can tell it's a troll... what worries me most is the ones that are acting "nice" and misinform. That is VERY messed up in my opinion.

I'm one to usually filter things out rather quickly but when I saw the comments regarding not showing up to OWS, that bothered me and it took a while before I actually gave it a second thought.

The movement of course isn't "organized" (in other words, it's not a structured thing, b/c obviously it's the "movement of the masses") therefore you have all kinds of people in it, with differences of opinions, etc. and our ideas are not "set in stone" (which is GOOD, b/c that is what democracy and freedom is about, but on the other hand you get these discrepancies)

I think, unless there is a declared "leader" (which to me is a BAD idea in itself b/c that can lead to the end of the movement and also to the vilification of a leader, as it has happened many times over) but I think it's not appropriate to give out "subjective" opinions, at least not to what the organization of the movement entails. We can give our 'subjective' opinion of course, but not in how we organize, unless we all agree upon it.

It's SUCH a complicated thing and each movement is different. It's hard to base a movement in a previous one and it's also hard to start from scratch. What do you guys think?

@janmarbol. I agree with you on the leader issue. Once our basic common grievences become better organized we could have designated speakers within each group with our basic list of grievences. It could be a common goal throughout the movement. IMO
  • BrightestEyeBrightestEye November 2011 +1 -1 (+1 / -0 )
    @ janmarbol

Designated speakers in each group that give a speech of the common goal of Occupy. Lots if people, I don't know if this is helpful but on Facebook, many are explaining that they feel the group is loosing direction to "Hardcore Socialist and Democrats" and the number of arrests is all the Facebook admins care about. This is appearing extremely negative, someone should post something inspirational like we used to, a speech, a inspirational song. A warning about trolls on the on the Facebook Page.

We do not need a declared leader but we can have a declared voice. We do need a few common goal, I feel as if this is the only way. Right now I feel like a chicken with my head cut off. A list of five main goals can be written for starters and an inspirational speech,

I watch Occupy Together on Facebook and we are having major problems, there are trolls who pretend to be for the movement and nicely persuade others to fight back with violence hiding behind the second amendment. There is a designated group of 5 or 6 characters, who spam the Facebook page arguing and insulting and misleading every response. The energy I get from Occupy Together's Facebook currently is very uninviting when it used to be welcoming and inspirational.

We need to fix our Facebook Page.
    Occupy Facebook.

1.Post inspirational speeches by famous speakers and quotes.

2.Post this link to clarify about the banks
    http://www.youtube.com/TheYoungTurks#p/search/27/qwQz7MMG1Hc

3.Post nonviolence reminders and how to handle instigators and trolls in the crowd.

4.Post songs, I remember Occupy posted Revolution by Nina Simone on
Facebook, not only was it positive, it bought peace over the page.
    Everyone enjoyed it.

    5. Put causes we can support , bring the troops home antiwar,(a few ideas)

6.Remind people that violence is not the answer, that we are a
nonviolent movement, (yes people need to be reminded)

    7. Tell people do not feed the trolls, trolls are anyone who pushes for violence
and arguments that last 4 hours should be private.

    8. Remind people of anarchist in crowds and how to react.

    9. Post speeches given by regular people.

10.Make people feel involved and tell them to promote small businesses.

That Facebook page is now a disgrace to the movement with the violence, insults and negativity. If we do this, the vibe of the pages will change from horrid to better and enlightened. We can not only post arrests, this isn't the only thing we are about! Who are the admins to Facebook, I must send this message to them.

    Peace

I hope he went to jail. I'm disgusted by this.
Do you know how to reach administrators for Facebook?

It seems the Facebook page messages are more positive! The poems, protest footage and photography really changed the mood!

Speaking to me will probably give someone the impression I was a Troll.
HEY I am showing my cards!
On the surface, I would say I agree with very little of Occupys' approach to civic envolement. Howevewr, If you don't read and ask questions, how do you create an informed opinion? Most of the time, I would consider my views could influence another 1% (1% Corp. Greed, 98% Occupy, 1% ME). They are strong, they are harsh, but they are sincere and truthful. Also very Constitutional. So if that makes me a Troll .....I'm a Troll!

    @gott5

I've never spoken to you in my life so I don't know where you could get that idea fom. No one in this specific discussion deemed you as a troll. You can ask whatever you like, I just hope it is in a mature , well thought-out manner , and to your question, the answer is quite obvious so I'm pretty sure you don't need my verification. Thinking isn't illegal yet, be my guest.

What we call trolls are people who love violence and try to sway a "peaceful protest" into violence suggesting things like "Hey, if we bought guns and gave them a taste of their own medicine under the First Amendment we could really end the Fed".
These people are violent trolls under a veil of niceness.
People who spam pages with ads are considered "Trolls".
People who argue for the sake of arguing for no reason are trolls

People who ask questions are not trolls. There is a huge difference between between strongly opinionated , honest person and a troll. One is mature and doesn't come of as rude and narrow-minded.

I love the Constitution too, that means no Martial Law, and wipe out the Patriot Act.
    Good day.
