Mic Check Challenge to All Occupiers – Help define a Constitutional Amendment as a core 2012 Issue
  • RoseGardener February 2012 +1 -1
WE are the Democracy – http://www.wearethedemocracy.com – Is conducting a Mic Check Challenge. You can find the challenge/contest at this link: http://www.wearethedemocracy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=189

(79% of) Americans support passage of an amendment to overturn the decision and make clear that corporations do not have the same rights as people thus giving Congress the authority to limit the amount of money corporations can spend on elections. .

However, one would not know this in listening to candidates running for U.S. Senate or Congressional Seats. One would not know it listening to sitting legislators. This issue is not getting the attention it deserves in an election year. And so… the Time to Amend project – http://www.wearethedemocracy.com/forum/amend.php – is reaching out to Occupiers everywhere and asking for your assistance.

All Mic Check contributions to the contest must be posted in the original contest thread: http://www.wearethedemocracy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=189

Have fun with this challenge, encourage your fellow Occupiers all over the country to get involved. Let’s team up and create ONE VOICE to Amplify the voices of the PEOPLE.

@RoseGardener, I appreciate your intentions, however, I am afraid your good intentions are misplaced.

You mentioned " (79% of) Americans support passage of an amendment to overturn the decision and make clear that corporations do not have the same rights as people thus giving Congress the authority to limit the amount of money corporations can spend on elections...However, one would not know this in listening to candidates running for U.S. Senate or Congressional Seats. Does't that at least suggest to you that "knowledge" and "education" of the public is not the main issue - i.e., even if you could fight the corporate media and have the public broadly agree on important topics like this? At the height of the Iraq war upwards of 80-90% of the population was against the war, and the politicians knew about it (as well as the ruling 1%) and yet that did not change the war plans. Why? Similarly, how do you expect such proposals as you are suggesting be taken seriously i.e., by the 1% ruling class and their economic power system and their current governmental regime?

What I expect is that silence and inaction only perpetuates the problem. I don't know that intentionally providing a venue where WE the PEOPLE can gather, self-organize around this issue and do the work of pushing it as a 2012 election year issue will work. What I do know - without a doubt - is that our silence, our apathy simply continues the status quo.

The ONLY thing that will get the the politicians in Washington to do the right thing is if WE the PEOPLE do team up and self-organize and push back with such a massive voice that we can no longer be ignored.

I am from WI - live near Madison, WI to be specific. The 1% ignored the 90% this entire last year. WE the PEOPLE are pushing back and we're not being ignored like we were a year ago. 1 Million signatures on recall petitions tends to turn a few heads. We've a long way to go to unseat Walker, and as I write this I can't say for sure that the money he has pouring into this state won't save his b_tt in the end. But... I'll be d_mned if I'm going to remain silent either. OUR best chance is to do the work of peacefully rising up and pushing back.

That is what I am proposing here - let us - the PEOPLE at least be intentional in making a constitutional amendment the 2012 election year issue it should be. Let us team up and work together - it is our best shot.

    In Peace - Rose
