Occupy the United Nations

    Dear Fellow Occupiers:

My nickname is Lady Sybilla, and I'm an OLA (Occupy Los Angeles) blogger. First off, I want to introduce myself and get to know other fellow occupiers from around the world. I also want to submit an event proposal for your consideration: Occupy the UN or Occupy the United Nations.

Why the UN? Because our own government is violating our constitutional rights in more ways than one. That's why I believe it's important for Washington to be held accountable for what it's doing to us.

Even though the UN is pretty much run by the US, it is still worth the try to at least appeal to other countries and bring to their attention the way many of our protesters are being abused by our own government. How is it possible that so many of our protesters are getting arrested for doing peaceful demonstrations? How is it possible that Washington is deliberately violating our constitutional rights with bills like the NDAA and SOPA, while no other entity is there to represent our interests?

If our own government is failing to protect its people, then maybe it's time for the UN to step in and mediate. Please leave me a comment. I'm really curious to find out what you think about my proposal. Whether or not you agree with me, I'm interested in learning about your opinion.

I don't think you will get anywhere with the UN since it is comprised of many other leaders who run their country with less freedoms than we have. IMO

Yeah... need more of a Occupy: White House ... President Obama has not delivered any hope and change and is in bed with Corporate America, just like the rest of them.

Whew! What a lot Occupy involves with. Whitefeather's and MiddleGround's comments sound discouraging. I'll try to talk up the idea anyway because I hope Occupy is International. Other countries having less freedom and Obama letting us down, might be the reason to get involved with the United Nations. Here on occupytogether discussions "2012 Candidates" and "Food Security" and "Wanting to Be Native", I'm arguing that we must be more bold. We should presume to lead the whole world by providing food security through the UN. Doesn't anyone like the idea of involvement with the United Nations?
  • Lady Sybilla Id love to read your blog, what's the url?
  • MiddleGround January 2012 +1 -1 (+1 / -0 )
Sorry to sound discouraged, but reality is reality. American politics is in bed with big business... and you can be a repub, demo, indy, whatever. This is the time to do something, and 'BOLD', as Sea, says is needed. Start with the White House and the United nations. I agree on that one...

    Agrees: whitefeather

    Yeah, MiddleGround.
A middle ground is good and I'm not thinking half way between the Repubs and Demos. Let me line up a couple of more ducks and then shoot them down. :) The other EVENTS posting here is for an International GA, possibly arranged by the European Union. There are discussions happening between Occupies in various places for a coordinated strategy. At such a Committee of Correspondence discussion, an Occupier from Las Vegas -- I guess its common knowledge foreclosures hit them big -- said they are preparing to rely on their GA for basic services govt won't be able to provide in the future! In Sacramento we have a Strategy Building working group. I think Occupy -- maybe along with Arab Spring -- will agree on something big and powerful. How might it work?

All I was saying is I didn't think we would get any support from many of the leaders (their people are kept on a tighter leash than we are) but there is a good chance some might assist us. I agree we should try and yes we need to be bold. It is always worth trying. It will be worth it just to have the different governments see what is really going on in our country along with how our government treats us and an international level is even better. @Sea; sorry I didn't mean to sound so discouraging.

I consider our revolution to be an ethical revolution, with politics being the way you organize what people do, which is their ethics. And whereas in the past scholarship revolves around many different things, different countries, and different world views, today we have the chance to form a united world view that isn't totalitarian. I only want to insist on feeding everyone. See the post in the BIG IDEAS topic on "Ethical Center Through Food Security."

I think that instead of seeing the United Nations as being either a tool of the USA, or a totalitarian international organization, or at best ineffective, that we should see it as the international forum where we can work out regional national and international concerns. Just as we would eclipse Congress' dysfunction, we might eclipse international dysfunction regarding governments, corporations, flows of capital, and ethical scruples.

The platform needed is more than gaining some support of everyone's 'favorite' politicians and their Dem - Repub friends. Once you hop on a political block/side, you are put on THAT one side, then lose credibility and are labeled and grouped with the 'dysfunction'. How will any TRUE results happen from that? Once you lose credibility, you are doomed. A lot of other dysfunction besides Congress Mr. Sea. President Obama is about to ask for another 1.2 TRILLION $$ for a higher debt ceiling. When is it going to end? Congress will talk big and bad and bold but give it to him in the end, as an example of continuous disfunction of the US Government. For change and results, like I said, you need a platform outside the normal scope of things. EU platform setting?, UN platform setting? I don't know yet...

    MiddleGround,
I don't know for sure either. I appreciate you considering what I've said. I see your point that the platform must prevent us "losing credibility", and it must be "outside the normal scope of things". Like you said, maybe European Union based or UN based. I just feel that Occupy can do something big and maybe it does involve an International General Assembly, that can't be controlled by the USA govt. I hope you'll keep talking to me. Maybe we can talk our way out of the insanity. They say the hardest part of getting something big going is right at the beginning. Like a jumbo-jet trying to take off it uses a whole lot of fuel, and then when its in the air its easier to keep it going. Maybe these discussions are the really hard part. :)

I think people here in Sacramento know this. We've really struggled and our occupation had to "die" and be reborn. We still are going against the grain. Thanks for being part of this; what I hope will be a sigh of relief for the world if we can succeed.
