Getting fired for Occupy involvement

Greetings! Do you think you may have been fired from your job because of your involvement in Occupy? Or do you know someone who may have been?

I have been heavily involved in Occupy Bangor (Maine), and I was recently let go from my job, and I believe it may have been because of my involvement in Occupy Bangor.

First I was told I was being put on indefinite leave as a cost-saving measure, but then my supervisor told me the law firm where I was working was doing just fine financially. I was told the firm intended to call me back at some point, but I was told nothing about when that might possibly be. I later filed for unemployment, and my (former) supervisor told a Department of Labor employee that the firm had no intention of ever calling me back to work.

As a result of my involvement with Occupy Bangor I was in the local newspaper, and on local television and radio news, a fair amount. A few weeks before being let go, a friend who had previously worked for the law firm told me there were lawyers in the firm who were "not too crazy" about Occupy Bangor.

So that's my story, and I'm wondering whether anyone out there has had a similar experience. If so, I would love to hear about it.

How many examples of greed and corruption must you see before you act?

Our corporations are lying to us, America. They sell us happiness and health, they deliver anything but, and they're getting away with it. Why? Because in many cases they've paid politicians and "lobbied" bureaucrats to twist the rules to where it is legal to lie - or at least legal to hide the truth. Here is one example from many:

Unless you're one of the few Americans with the wisdom and discipline to throw their TV out the window, you've probably seen commercials like this one wherein GMO cereal king General Mills claims that "Cheerios, made from all grain natural oats, is the only leading cold cereal clinically proven to lower cholesterol."

That claim may be legally true, but it is patently false for the following reasons:

1. Cheerios may be "made from all grain natural oats", but it also "made from" many other ingredients. The Cheerios website assures us that "All Cheerios cereal varieties have at least 8 grams of whole grain per serving", but omits the fact that a "serving" is 28 grams:

And what's in the other 20 grams? This article will give you some idea. Pay special attention to the commentary regarding genetically modified corn starch and trisodium phosphate (TSP), which is a cleaning compound:

2. As we reported earlier, in the USA "natural" has no regulated meaning with respect to food or food labels. Consequently, General Mills can legally refer to the oats in Cheerios as "natural" regardless of any genetically engineered origin. The truth is that General Mills "...continues to use genetically-modified (GM) ingredients in its cereal products, as well as corn syrup, artificial flavors, and artificial colorings - all of which wreak havoc on health...":

3. The part about Cheerios being "the only leading cold cereal clinically proven to lower cholesterol" uses the "leading" adjective to avoid challenges from cereals that might be healthier but not as well known. And the "clinically proven" phrase that provides the claim's sole source of credibility refers to a study "conducted by Provident Clinical Research, a for-profit institute that gets paid by General Mills and other manufacturers to design, implement, and analyze tests that will always shine a bright light on the product in question."

The opening sentence in this General Mills press release (propaganda piece) reads "Research presented today at the Experimental Biology Meeting revealed Cheerios can help lower cholesterol by 10 percent in one month."

This is another cleverly-worded deception. General Mills doesn't directly claim that "Cheerios can help lower cholesterol", but rather states that was "revealed" by "research", which as we just explained was tainted. The fact that tainted research was presented at some "Experimental Biology Meeting" sounds auspicious but means nothing. And once the lie is unleashed, the distortion of the truth becomes pandemic. They've even got Lance Armstrong lying for them, and the lie goes unretracted even after he knew about the FDA warning letter:

Recent events eerily like movie Star Wars

Does anybody besides me notice the weird way recent events parallel the Star Wars movies? Palpatine uses the fear created by enemies of the Republic to get the Senate to grant him emergency powers. These powers were then extended to destroy a Republic and create an Empire. We all know what happened from there.
Our Senate and House pass the NDAA supposedly in response to terrorism. The NDAA that was passed destroys a Republic. Is there a Palpatine waiting to step up and declare themselves Emperor? A quote from the movie says something like, " so this is how a Republic dies, to the sound of thunderous applause." I kinda feel like that is what is going on now. I wish we had Luke Skywalker to help us. I just kinda found this interesting, not really important.

Yesterday we attended a local gathering that was covered by two local news stations. The group pulled everything together in less then 48 hours, and we had nearly 100 people, the demonstration was a great success. One of the stations seemed to only be filming a small part of the huge group, some of us wondered why they would do that. When the broadcast occurred, only a small group standing behind the reporter were visible, purporting a much smaller group. When I called the station to tell them that I and others were not happy about it, the woman at the station asked me what we wanted and why we were there. I, speaking for myself and others I care for, quickly responded with about ten considerations, the first being the request that the personhood status of corporations be reversed. I then followed with a comment about how wrong it is for BOA to provide two BOA employees millions in severance pay while charging the unemployed new fees for debit cards. Next I told the story of a friend who bought a house in Virginia for nearly $400,000 on a street where now over a third of the homes have been foreclosed on and are vacant, two burned down, and my friend's house could not sell for half of of what she paid for it today. It is common sense for banks to work with these home owners rather then put families out into the streets of America while the houses sit vacant for years and rot. I went on to talk about the cost of higher education and student loans, teachers pay cuts, the high cost of healthcare and the plight of the under and uninsured, etc. The woman politely thanked me and told me that now she better understands why we were there yesterday demonstrating. Sadly, mainstream media has been feeding a perception to those who do not understand that the 99er's want the 1% to take care of the rest of us, while nothing could be further from the truth. An idea that my son and I discussed might help with the image for the public who has yet to join us. What if Occupy Together and all of the groups collaborating here were to put out a press release introducing the 99er's call for 99 Changes that will benefit the majority. The 99 Changes could come from suggestions from all who use this website, with the most popular 99 Changes being profiled and widely discussed. I am all for reversing personhood for corporations as number 1. What does everyone think?

The memory of that first night will stay with me forever. The skin soaking rain. The connected energy. The cold gusts of air that whipped through every alley, down every street, and especially, I think, around us. We had two tarps, blankets, some supplies, and sleeping bags, all in a pile directly in front of the statehouse. The threat of a powerful storm circulated through the group and we tried to construct some makeshift cover with three bikes and one of the tarps. With one good gust of wind, I had a bike on my head and there were laughs and hurried steps to amend the temporary shelter. I’m sure to anyone watching, we appeared to be quite a motley crew, unlikely to survive for long.

One of the only two other women there that night, Karen, pulled me to the side and said under her breath, “I have a tent in my car, do you think I should go get it and put it up?” I heard courage in her whisper, even defiance. My eyes lit up at the thought of a more permanent structure, but seeing as how this was a “leaderless” movement, we went around trying to get consensus. No one else really seemed to be too eager to put up the tent and there were objections based on the possibility of arrest or police involvement so early in the movement. Looking back on this now, I can’t help but wonder where those complaints stemmed from. Was it that we looked young, or excited, or unintelligent, or dangerous, or female? No matter, we put the thing up anyway, with the revision of using the tent solely for storage of supplies. Once we (Karen, my friend Watt, and I) brought the tent from Karen’s car, all but a few gathered to assist in its assembly. And with that, we had staked our claim.

We were officially… occupying. This was OUR house, now. I remember being filled with an almost familiar hope and modest excitement. Every part of me had a right and a reason to be there. I was there as a woman, as a student and like many others there, a lover of peace, equality, justice, movement, and progress. We knew the world was watching this movement, because we had all watched it ourselves. We had seen the revolutionaries in Egypt and Tunisia, fighting for justice and equality. We watched as 20,000 people marched in solidarity through New York. We stood beside them in solidarity and consensus when they proclaimed

“The future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments.”

That was the night the tide crested, with around 300 people attending the general assembly that evening. There were somewhat rotating conversations, harmonizing with almost an organic fluidity. We were all there as so many people and all as humans. All dissatisfied. It was our time to be heard, and we would stay here until you listened, and did something. So many passersby inquired “What is this? Why are you here?” to which any number of voices would respond; CORPORATE GREED! WHERE’S MY BAILOUT? END THE FED! Some of the occupiers were lucky enough to be well versed in economics and politics which allowed a phenomenal dialogue to envelop the tent day after day.
From that first night on, the movement ebbed and flowed, waves swirling and shaping into something that was, at times, unrecognizable. The seed that was planted grew, even morphed, over the next two months into what it is today. It had become more than just a vehicle for so many passionate minds, but a teacher. The Occupy movement has always been about standing up against economic and social injustice. About the widening disparity between the “99%” and the elite “1%”, and about corporate influence in government; but we were a microcosm of that as Occupy #^%&*^%#. This is the world I have lived in and researched over the last eight weeks. This is my story as part of that world.

Eventually we had three tents, and then a larger pavilion style tent took the place of one of the camping tents. This provided room for an information area and storage. The supplies poured in from supporters who couldn’t make it out to the site, and even from those who were there on a regular, consistent basis. We had more bread than we knew what to do with, seeing as how there was only a rotation of 10-15 regulars who utilized the majority of the supplies. We were giving food away to homeless people or the folks waiting for the bus. We had so much support from the people who saw us every day. Bus drivers would honk, as well as cab drivers and average citizens making their way down High street. Those were little victories. I remember the day we got a generator and wireless internet, another milestone for those who saw this thing grow from infancy, rain-soaked and uncoordinated to permits being renewed weekly and occupiers warmed (and sometimes set aflame) by the glow of a propane heater. But some of those who were considered “regulars” were somehow placed into roles, regardless of consent. Self-appointed leaders arose in a leaderless movement.

A large portion of the women in this movement found themselves in less than desirable positions in this pseudo hierarchy. I was enlisted as a resident “keeper of the house”, along with a couple of the other women who were there frequently. I organized supplies, cleaned up the tents, as well as standing outside with signs and doing a few overnight shifts (until I got bronchitis). When asked about her own concerns regarding her involvement in the movement, Karen expressed disappointment and frustration at allowing herself to fall into those all too familiar social norms that are relentlessly forced upon women. She told me “I've had a hard time speaking out at General Assemblies or group meetings and as a result, my contributions to the movement have tended to be in the form of doing dirty work like laundry and food and beverage drop-offs”.

As I discussed involvement with some of the other women in the movement, I quickly found that we were all having similar experiences, and we had some similar concerns. This movement is the first of its kind in decades, and so it is welcoming masses of young people into an unfamiliar world; a world which can be difficult to navigate and somewhat intimidating. This is especially true for women, who are grossly underrepresented, at least at the local level. When asked to explain what issues they thought need to be addressed and/or resolved, one woman responded, “On a local level we need to get more women involved in the movement. I think right now it is a male dominated space, which can be intimidating and even unwelcoming for some women. Not saying that the men at the site are particularly aggressive, but some women just aren’t comfortable around large groups of men they don’t know”.

If we want to succeed as a legitimate movement of the masses, in bringing justice to those who are continually offended by the injustice of this society, we must speak from lips formed by the framework of the affected. To look at our particular leg of the Occupy movement, and take it as an authentic representation of the 99%, you would be profoundly mistaken. The brunt of disparity in this country is born by people of color and women, the two smallest factions in the Occupy #^%&*^%# movement. These two groups suffer from a disproportionate amount of poverty, discrimination, and under-representation in government.

However, there have been instances where I and other female members of O# have felt objectified. I have personally witnessed members of the movement engaging in behavior that, whether consciously or not, further perpetuates the constraints imposed by the exact beast we are at war with. Reading the responses from the women I interviewed, hearing my own voice in theirs, I was reminded of an excerpt from Audre Lorde.

“What does it mean when the tools of a racist patriarchy are used to examine the fruits of that same patriarchy? It means that only the most narrow perimeters of change are possible and allowable. Know that survival is not an academic skill. It is learning how to stand alone, unpopular and sometimes reviled, and how to make common cause with those others identified as outside the structures in order to define and seek a world in which we can all flourish. It is learning how to take our differences and make them strengths. For the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house. They may allow us temporarily to beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change.”

If we want the issues of healthcare, education, employment and so many more, to be addressed, we need a stronger voice… a more unified and representative voice. The movement, at least locally, lacks diversity. This is an invitation to align yourself with those already fighting for justice. We need to support each other, not regardless of our differences, but in awareness and celebration of them. The colder months are coming quickly, and many fear dissolution due to lack of cohesion and unity within the movement. I have seen people come and go, not just as transients, but as members to non-members of this movement. I myself have taken significant steps back.

If we want to welcome people into this movement, if we want to succeed as a whole, we have to treat each other with respect. All of us. We need to be aware of ourselves and considerate of each other or this fire will die out prematurely. By (any and each of us) falling into those archaic roles of offensive or oppressive language and behavior, even if directed at one’s self, we are battling ourselves with the fierce weapons handed to us so long ago. What a shame to be driving away such passionate and insightful minds by our own oppressor’s devices.

We are fighting for equality, for each other and for the world, but it needs to start with us. How can we demand fair treatment when we are disrespecting each other? You are personally accountable. You are responsible for your awareness of another’s existence. How can we hold culpable our offender when we overlook such basic rights? I will stand beside this movement, not the part of it I was before, until there is equality and decency within, for all people. Only then can we move forward, united.

SEC. 1031. AFFIRMATION OF AUTHORITY OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES TO DETAIN COVERED PERSONS PURSUANT TO THE AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF MILITARY FORCE.

(a) In General- Congress affirms that the authority of the President to use all necessary and appropriate force pursuant to the Authorization for Use of Military Force (Public Law 107-40) includes the authority for the Armed Forces of the United States to detain covered persons (as defined in subsection (b)) pending disposition under the law of war.

(b) Covered Persons- A covered person under this section is any person as follows:

(1) A person who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored those responsible for those attacks.

(2) A person who was a part of or substantially supported al-Qaeda, the Taliban, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners, including any person who has committed a belligerent act or has directly supported such hostilities in aid of such enemy forces.

(c) Disposition Under Law of War- The disposition of a person under the law of war as described in subsection (a) may include the following:

(1) Detention under the law of war without trial until the end of the hostilities authorized by the Authorization for Use of Military Force.

We have the attention of the world, “The whole world IS watching”….Now what?

I am a 40 year old Father/Partner/Son/Grandson and I have been involved with the occupy movement since basically around the first of October. The one thing that stood out to me more than anything else was one word -“Equality”. That one word encompassed the feelings, frustrations and by all accounts hopelessness I have been feeling on a very personal level for over 20 years… I thought to myself “This is it. This is the movement I have been hoping for all my life.”

Since becoming involved in the movement, I have heard a lot of other words like “Bank Bailouts”, “The Fed”,” fractional reserve banking”, and ”corruption in politics” just to name a few (but seem to be the most popular) of the buzz words. While I have always been very aware of these things, I just always wrote all that off to the way society as a whole had become and not the fault of any particular entity. All of which, on the surface and under our current system, are very bad things. While I guess if we plan on keeping things like they are and the way they have always been, since practically the earliest days of ancient civilization, we do need to fix it. I, however, am getting discouraged by the notion of fixing a system back to broken and just asking for a fair share of it.. I guess I am just aspiring for so much more, and I hope it is not too much…

In America, people are outraged with the incidents of pepper spraying and people not being allowed to assemble (rightfully so) – But where is our outrage and solidarity for our brothers and sisters in Egypt and Syria and many other locations throughout the world where innocent people are being murdered in the streets for assembly? For the men, women and children around the world being slaughtered while fighting for their rights? Are Americans really only fighting to make the system we have a little fairer for us, or are we in this for true equality for everyone?

So I return to my original statement, “The whole world is watching” – Should we not use that to unite the world for global change? I for one am, and have always been, bothered by the fact that in this day and age, when we can travel to the moon (and should be living on it), that we cannot insure no man, woman or child EVER goes hungry, without shelter or without equal medical care just to name a few of the basic human rights that should be afforded EVERYONE. Isn’t it time that we all realized we are all born out of the very universe itself and that borders on our lands are outdated and are used to separate and perpetuate hate? That this planet and everything born of it belongs to each of us (and all living things biological and ecologically) equally. That everyone’s contribution to society must be equally valued, and that those contributions should be leveled with the enrichment of one’s life (through self and formal education, arts, hobbies, civic duties and family/personal relationship building).

A lot of people have been coming together now for almost 3 months both to occupy and for various calls to action just where I am from. There are places around the world were people have fought for generations to have less freedoms than I have. We must get everyone that wants to change the world NOW to gather NOW (figuratively speaking – has to be some notice) and not move until we fix the world the way it should be or at least get it in the right. Not just in your city or state, not just in any one nation, but everyone across the world united to demand equality. International Human Rights Day is December 10th...….I can think of no better day to make this final stand…. Occupy The Earth!!

too many hoaxes, impersonators, trolls out there... we need an official center of information or some kind of "certificate" if you will (if that exists) that tells us that it's not a sabotage of their message(s). Again, I saw a site that is taking credit for being Anon, and it was not a pleasant one. Can someone please explain if anything is in place. PS I understand that Anon = anonymous and the point is to remain undisclosed... and that perhaps we're getting these trolls to sabotage them by the same ones who we are struggling against... so does anyone have an idea of how to get around this?

The company's 46,000+ employees serve the Department of Defense (DoD), the intelligence community, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other federal government agencies. SAIC had revenue of $11.1 billion for its fiscal year 2010.

Since 1995 SAIC has contributed over $3.8 million to political campaigns, split evenly between Democrats and Republicans, with Barack Obama and John McCain being the top recipients. That amount is eclipsed by the more than $24 million they've invested in lobbying since 1997. And over that same period, SAIC's penalties for federal contractor misconduct have far exceeded their pay-to-play payola: SAIC paid a $24.9 million settlement for rigging bids on General Services Administration (GSA) contracts, $5 million to the Air Force for false claims and defective pricing, and all told over $32 million for a dozen different instances of government fraud, ethics and other violations. In the U.S., the only 5 companies producing it are Bayer, Dow, Momentive Specialty Chemicals (formerly Hexion), SABIC Innovative Plastics (formerly GE Plastics), and Sunoco, "collectively bringing in $6 billion a year in revenue from BPA alone."

And just what is BPA? Some sources define it as an "organic compound", while others say it is "made from petroleum". And guess what? They're both correct! Just like Con-Agra can legally label genetically-modified foods as "All Natural" - in the United States at least - it is acceptable in many circles to refer to petroleum as "organic". That should make it easy for Big Oil to "Go Green", since it's all just a matter of packaging:

And in the U.S. food and beverage industry, that's just how Bisphenol-A is used. BPA, an estrogen-mimicking chemical, is used to make plastic containers like baby bottles and to line food and drink cans. Thousands of BPA studies have been conducted over the years, and many of them have linked the chemical to breast cancer, early puberty, infertility, obesity and a whole host of other health problems. That was enough for the Canadian government to declare Bisphenol-A to be a toxic substance last year:

That has not been enough, however, for the U.S. Food & Drug Administration or our food and beverage companies to follow suit. One reason is that some "scientific" studies of the effects of BPA exposure and consumption by people and animals have reported different results. Studies like this recent one, which concluded that "...the available evidence indicates that BPA exposure represents no noteworthy risk to the health of the human population, including newborns and babies":

And what other conclusion would one expect from such a study, when BPA producers like Bayer AG were behind it? As CaliforniaWatch.org disclosed:

"Four authors of a new report concluding that bisphenol A is safe have ties to companies and groups that benefit from the controversial chemical. Two of the researchers - Hermann Schweinfurth and Wolfgang Volkel - reported their affiliations in the report's 'declaration of interest.' Two others - Werner Lilienblum and Peter-Jurgen Kramer - have professional websites linking them to the chemical industry... Schweinfurth acknowledged in his declaration that he works for Bayer Schering Pharma AG, the largest producer of bisphenol A, or BPA, in Europe. Volkel reported receiving funding from the international industry group BPA Global in the past. Lilienblum runs a 'consultancy for the industry.' And Kramer describes himself as a 'leading toxicologist in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry' who is currently 'developing and shaping' toxicology in Germany and throughout Europe."

Using the tainted conclusions of Bayer-sponsored "research" like this as an excuse, profit-before-people corporations like Coca-Cola continue lining their cans with a toxic chemical that they claim to be safe while at the same time assuring the public that they are actively pursuing alternatives. Actually, Bayer AG has a long history of knowingly selling chemicals that kill people. During World War II, for example, the company was "...part of IG Farben, a conglomerate of German chemical industries that formed a part of the financial core of the German Nazi regime. I have a love/hate relationship with this social media platform. Unfortunately it is the best option out there right now because:
A) Highest Membership
B) Excellent Design
C) Ease of Access

I dread being a member only because of those pesky filters I've encountered. Anyone else have to fill out a 'security check captcha' when posting important info? Or sometimes they just won't allow you to post it. It just keeps asking you to 'try again.' I remember a time that this wasn't a problem on the website, why is the freedom of speech narrowing with time here? Restricting the flow of 'legal' information is becoming more and more normal nowadays.

On #N17 I sent a message with some 'sensational' links to a friend on the Occupy Together team and a 'security check' popped up asking me to fill out the random selection of two words. Well the second word I had to type said "observed." I thought "What are the odds?" But I knew this wasn't coincidence because it was the first time I ever had to fill out a captcha to send a private message on Facebook.

There was one situation I videotaped where Facebook literally gave me a blank captcha over and over when trying to post a link to a Nigerian forum exploring the atrocity of the Libyan 'humanitarian mission,' headed up by US/NATO, France, & England. I have heard whispers of a new activist social media platform being constructed. It may end up being called 'The Global Square'

I wasn't sure what to think of this occupy thing at first, so I decided to visit my local occupation in person. I talked to a quite a few different people, who had a variety of reasons for being there, usually involving the environment, corporate greed, and government corruption. But not one of them complained about being broke or jobless. I didn't see any signs that said "Find me a job", or "Give me money". People said they were there to protest about the world's problems, not their own problems. I did end up talking to many of them about what they did for a living as well, and found many who did have full time jobs, including some nurses, teachers, lawyers, office workers, but for sure there was some jobless as well.

It seams like some people are under the impression that the protesters are just out there to have fun at the tax payers expense. I'm not sure how much fun it is to sleep out in the cold in a tent, knowing that at any moment you could be pepper sprayed and arrested by the police. When you direct your anger towards the protesters, you are doing exactly what those who caused the financial collapse want you to do: direct attention away from them. Corporate leaders have been putting their own desires ahead of everything else in the world, and the government has done next to nothing about it. What kind of message are we sending them if we hear about this sort of thing and just let it happen? What kind of precedent does that set?

I've also heard people say, "It's their money and they've worked hard to earn it, so don't they deserve to do what they want with it?" Would you play a game of Monopoly with a person who can change the rules whenever they want? Would you think highly of this person if they win the game? This is what happens when government allows corporations have such heavy influence over them. They change the rules, and oh look, they win.

So please, next time you're tempted to shout out "Occupy a Job" to a protester (who might very well have a job), is it too much to ask that you try to have an open mind?

Doing his part to promote the ever-increasing export of aircraft and weapons to shoot them down "made in America" by our Military and Prison Industrial Complexes, last week U.S. Arms-Dealer-in-Chief Barack Hussein Bushbama wrapped up his 9-day Asia-Pacific sales trip by touting $25 billion in new orders from our "allies" in the region. Principal beneficiaries included prison labor exploiter Boeing and other Top 10 war profiteers such as GE and United Technologies, whose Sikorsky subsidiary came away with a $325 million order for Black Hawk helicopters from the Brunei Ministry of Defense:

How a tiny Islamic sultanate of only 400,000 people can afford $325 million worth of "Death from Above" and what they plan to do with it are intriguing questions for you and I, but probably of little concern to United Technologies. Pratt & Whitney produces the F135 engine that powers the "next generation" F-35 fighter jet, which according to a study by the Rand Corporation "can't turn, can't climb, can't run". Beginning with a $4.8 billion development contract awarded just weeks after 9/11 gave our defense industry the keys to the Treasury, by 2010 the cost to "complete" the F135 engine was estimated at over $7.28 billion. On top of that, earlier this year the Department of Defense (DoD) awarded Pratt & Whitney $1.13 billion for F135 engine production, and this month the U.S. Navy gave them another $75 million "to fund a set of studies on feasibility, operational readiness, cost, and implementation of the Joint Strike Fighter engines, which are already in production. Did you catch that last part? The Navy is paying a defense contractor $75 million to study the "feasibility, readiness and cost" of their own product! What do you think their conclusion will be?

The insanity doesn't end there... Pratt & Whitney's potential slice of the trillion dollar F-35 pie is estimated at $100 billion. That caught the eye of GE and Rolls Royce, who teamed up to offer the "F136" as an alternative engine. Against the Pentagon's wishes, a Congress awash in GE payola (over $30 million in contributions since 1989, and over $245 million in lobbying since 1997) funded development of the second engine right up until last April when - in a rare display of fiscal integrity, or more likely deference to the millions United Technologies invested in lobbying and PR (e.g. F135engine.com) for its demise - the DoD pulled the plug on the secondary engine program:

I've been reading so much on this topic and realized there was no discussion on it yet. Ok so here's the skinny. TransCanada has proposed to the US government that they build a pipeline that stretches across the entire US all the way down to Texas oil refineries. This can not happen. Just take a second to reflect on how many domestic oil spills have occurred in the last 3 years alone. There have been hundreds of demonstrations and direct action against this already. Thousands have circled the White House lawn warning Obama to not sign off on it. Ultimately it is his decision. A common lie that distrubuted by TransCanada is that it will lower gas prices and reduce the use of 'conflict' oil. After taking the risk of tranporting it across the country they plan to export it! The EROEI (energy return on energy invested) rating on tar sands oil should be argument enough that this whole project is a sham.

What is Tar Sands Oil? It is a sandy oil rich substance that is pummeled with boiling water, heated by natural gas, to seperate the sediment from the oil. They are literally burning gas and wasting water to make this oil.

Not to mention the devestation that it has caused to the first nations tribes living North of the Tar Sands Quarry in Alberta. Natives to this land are dying quickly from the environmental degredation caused by the mining operation.

The constitutionality of "the United States Congress Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction" a.k.a. "the Supercommittee" created on August 2nd by the "Budget Control Act of 2011" is a question few of our corporate-controlled politicians or media pundits have the intestinal fortitude to debate. And we don't have the bandwidth to address the issue here, so we leave it for now to you, the reader, to pursue:

Regardless of legitimacy, the Supercommittee is charged with issuing a recommendation for at least $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction over the next decade by this Wednesday, November 23rd. If it fails to agree on a package or the full Congress fails to pass it, a so-called "trigger mechanism" would enact $1.2 trillion in "automatic spending cuts" which cannot be traced back to any specific Senator or Representative. This fiction thus enables our politicians to make unpopular budget cuts without any personal accountability to their constituents or the American people as a whole.

Allegedly included in those automatic spending cuts is a $600 million reduction in defense spending - which may actually be a reduction in future increases only, and therefore not really a reduction at all. Real or not, if those "cuts" are triggered then CIA Director turned Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta says one of the first casualties will be the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program:

THE F-35: A WEAPON THAT COSTS MORE THAN AUSTRALIA

The U.S. will ultimately spend $1 trillion for these fighter planes. Where's the outrage over Washington's culture of waste?

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an impressive aircraft: a fifth generation multirole fighter plane with stealth technology. It's also a symbol of everything that's wrong with defense spending in America. In a rational world, U.S. military expenditure would focus on the likely threats that the United States faces today and in the future. And at a time of mounting national debt, the Tea Party would be knocking down the Pentagon's door to cut waste. But the only tea party in sight is the one overseen by the Mad Hatter, as we head down the rabbit hole into the military industrial wonderland.

The F-35 is designed to be the core tactical fighter aircraft for the U.S. military, with three versions for the Air Force, Navy, and the Marine Corps. Each plane clocks in at around $90 million. In a decade's time, the United States plans to have 15 times as many modern fighters as China, and 20 times as many as Russia.

So, how many F-35s do we need? 100? 500? Washington intends to buy 2,443, at a price tag of $382 billion. Add in the $650 billion that the Government Accountability Office estimates is needed to operate and maintain the aircraft, and the total cost reaches a staggering $1 trillion. In other words, we're spending more on this plane than Australia's entire GDP ($924 billion).

The F-35 is the most expensive defense program in history, and reveals massive cost overruns, a lack of clear strategic thought, and a culture in Washington that encourages incredible waste. Money is pouring into the F-35 vortex. In 2010, Pentagon officials found that the cost of each plane had soared by over 50 percent above the original projections. The program has fallen years behind schedule, causing billions of dollars of additional expense, and won't be ready until 2016. An internal Pentagon report concluded that: "affordability is no longer embraced as a core pillar." In January 2011, even Defense Secretary Robert Gates, a champion of the aircraft, voiced his frustration: "The culture of endless money that has taken hold must be replaced by a culture of restraint."

The F-35 is meant to be the future of U.S. tactical airpower, but the program harks back to the Cold War, when we faced an aggressive great power rival. The world has changed. The odds of great power war have declined dramatically. We still need a deterrent capacity against China and Russia, but how much is enough? In a decade's time, the United States plans to have 15 times as many modern fighters as China, and 20 times as many as Russia. Meanwhile, new challenges and threats have emerged. We should be focusing our military spending on the types of campaigns that we're actually likely to face: complex asymmetric wars against weaker opponents, where manpower and intelligence are critical.

And it's hard to square the military largesse with our rampant debt. Republicans want to slash billions from programs like early education, in Representative Jeb Hensarling's words, to "save our children from bankruptcy." So where is the outrage at the F-35's outlandish cost?

Some just don't seem to care. When it comes to defense, Republicans are the champions of big government and massive expenditure. The F-35 is too big to fail. At the same time, many Democrats keep quiet for fear of looking weak on defense - unless, like Senator Bernie Sanders, they're from Vermont. Other politicians are bought off with pork. Defense suppliers are spread throughout dozens of states, giving everyone a reason to look the other way.

Any serious effort to balance the federal budget will require significant cuts in defense spending. And the F-35 is a prime target. The 2010 bipartisan Bowles-Simpson Commission on deficit reduction suggested canceling the Marine Corps's version of the F-35, and halving the number of F-35s for the Air Force and Navy - replacing them with current generation F-16s, which cost one-third as much. This would save close to $30 billion from 2011 to 2015. The plan went nowhere.

We used to be content to outspend Australia on aircraft. Now we literally spend Australia on aircraft.

Why shouldn't I work for the NSA? That's a tough one. But I'll take a shot. Say I'm working at the NSA, and somebody puts a code on my desk, somethin' no one else can break. Maybe I take a shot at it and maybe I break it. And I'm real happy with myself, cus' I did my job well. But maybe that code was the location of some rebel army in North Africa or the Middle East and once they have that location, they bomb the village where the rebels are hiding... Fifteen hundred people that I never met, never had no problem with get killed. Now the politicians are sayin', "Oh, Send in the marines to secure the area" cus' they don't give a shit. It won't be their kid over there, gettin' shot. Just like it wasn't them when their number got called, cus' they were off pullin' a tour in the National Guard. It'll be some kid from Southie over there takin' shrapnel in the ass. He comes back to find that the plant he used to work at got exported to the country he just got back from. And the guy who put the shrapnel in his ass got his old job, cus' he'll work for fifteen cents a day and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile he realizes the only reason he was over there in the first place was so that we could install a government that would sell us oil at a good price. And of course the oil companies used the little skirmish over there to scare up domestic oil prices. A cute little ancillary benefit for them but it ain't helping my buddy at two-fifty a gallon. They're takin' their sweet time bringin' the oil back, of course, maybe even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who likes to drink martinis and fuckin' play slalom with the icebergs, it ain't too long 'til he hits one, spills the oil and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic. So now my buddy's out of work. He can't afford to drive, so he's walking to the fuckin' job interviews, which sucks because the shrapnel in his ass is givin' him chronic hemorrhoids. And meanwhile he's starvin' cus' every time he tries to get a bite to eat the only blue plate special they're servin' is North Atlantic scrod with Quaker State. So what did I think? I'm holdin' out for somethin' better. I figure fuck it, while I'm at it why not just shoot my buddy, take his job, give it to his sworn enemy, hike up gas prices, bomb a village, club a baby seal, hit the hash pipe and join the National Guard? I could be elected President.

Thanks to the American Frozen Food Institute and other corporate lobbies pouring on the payola, our bought and paid for puppet politicians in Washington have determined that a slice of pizza is a healthy vegetable if served to our kids at school, but not if served to our poor by a restaurant. And up until this week YUM! Brands - the global conglomerate that owns well-known junk food chains like KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell - was working hard to correct that contradiction. Not by eliminating the obvious insanity of classifying pizza as a vegetable, of course, but by lobbying to approve the use of EBT cards (a.k.a. "food stamps") to make purchases at their restaurants. According to BusinessWeek.com:

"Yum [had] lobbied government officials in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Kentucky to allow its restaurants to participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which is administered by the states. The nearly five-decade-old program distributed a record $64.4 billion in the 2010 fiscal year. 'Everybody wants to get a piece of that action,' says Marion Nestle, a New York University professor of nutrition and public health. 'Right now it's going to grocery stores; restaurants think that's not fair.' [But health] advocates howled when they learned that fast-food giant Yum! Brands (YUM) wants to let low-income Americans use food stamps at its Taco Bell and KFC restaurants. Now the U.S. Agriculture Dept., which funds the food stamp program, has also voiced its opposition and is encouraging states not to give Yum a green light. 'For us to be indifferent to the quality of the food is just a serious mistake,' says Kevin Concannon, the Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition, and Consumer Services. 'We should promote access to healthy foods.'"

Anyway... Regardless of whether you pay with food stamps or Federal Reserve notes, the food you buy at KFC, Pizza Hut or Taco Bell may (remotely) taste "Southern", Italian or Mexican, but a portion of its ingredients - the exact amount being kept as secret as the Colonel's recipe - may actually be Chinese and consequently unsafe by American standards:

"China has become an agricultural powerhouse and leading food exporter. Though supermarket labels may not always
indicate it, a growing portion of the American diet is now made in China. In 2009, 70 percent of the apple juice, 43
percent of the processed mushrooms, 22 percent of the frozen spinach and 78 percent of the tilapia Americans ate
came from China. Unfortunately, it's not just China's food that's reaching American shores - it's also China's food safety problems. The shortcomings in China's food safety system were highlighted when ingredients tainted with the chemical melamine entered the global food supply... [Melamine] contaminated Chinese dairy products, sickening 300,000 children and infants in China, six of whom died... The melamine scandal played out across the globe, ending up in the food supplies of corporate producers including Mars, Unilever, Heinz, Cadbury and YUM! Brands, Inc. (which owns Pizza Hut, Subway and other fast food chains)."

I find no consolation in the likelihood that whatever YUM! is doing to "us", they are also doing to "them":

"Urban consumers in China are increasingly embracing American-style diets. Eating out is the fastest-growing segment
of Chinese consumer food spending. Much of this spending ends up at KFC, owned by Yum! Brands. KFC opens a new restaurant in China every 18 hours and purchases one quarter of all chicken thighs produced in China - literally
billions of pieces of meat. In 2010, Yum! Brands earned 36 percent of its profits from its 3,200 KFC and 500 Pizza Hut
restaurants in China - more than it made from the 19,000 KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and other company restaurants in
the United States. China now faces a new 'era of obesity,' mirroring U.S. overconsumption of fatty foods."

"FedEx Corp [formerly Federal Express] is the world's top express delivery service, thanks in large part to its close relationship with members of Congress and the White House. For years, the company has been a major campaign contributor to both Democrats and Republicans and is famous for its unique lobbying tactics, including the fleet of private planes that it keeps on stand-by for lawmakers who need to jet off at a moment's notice. In exchange, the company has gotten unparalleled access to debates over international trade, tax cuts and rules that govern the business practices of its one-time competitor, the United States Postal Service [USPS]. In 2001, FedEx cemented a groundbreaking deal with the USPS to deliver all of the post office's overnight packages and express deliveries. In turn, FedEx was allowed to put its drop boxes in post offices around the country."

Since 1989 FedEx has made over $20 million in campaign contributions to both Republicans (60%) and Democrats (40%), and since 1997 spent a staggering $80 million lobbying the Washington elite. In return they have been "awarded" over $11.8 billion in federal government defense, transportation and logistics contracts over the past decade, and they have seated at least 29 of their employees on key federal "advisory" committees at the Department of Transportation and elsewhere.

FedEx has also benefited greatly in recent years from a series of legislative and regulatory changes that might best be described as the systematic piecemeal privatization of the U.S. Postal Service, key among those changes being the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006 (PAEA) that required the Postal Service to prefund the health care benefits of future retirees - a burden no other government agency or private company bears - and contained other provisions that made it difficult if not impossible for the USPS to operate at optimum efficiency and effectively compete with companies like FedEx and the United Parcel Service (UPS). Those "other provisions" contributed far more to the $5.1 billion loss the USPS reported this week than did the impact of the Internet on first class mail volumes.

Also contributing greatly to USPS losses are the billions of dollars that - thanks to crony capitalism - they have been forced to pay to big-name federal contractors for transportation, technology and other outsourcing and support services that could be done in-house for much less money. Audits released by the USPS Office of the Inspector General published last year disclosed that millions of the dollars funneled to FedEx were unnecessary and wasteful, proving that their deal with FedEx was only a deal FOR FedEx. Here is a quote from of those audits:

"It was more effective and economical in some cases for the Capital Metro, Eastern, Great Lakes, and Northeast Areas to use ground transportation and domestic air carriers as well as to sort mail at Postal Service plants than to use FedEx to perform these functions. Because the areas used FedEx, the Postal Service incurred about $35.3 million in unnecessary costs. If these areas implement our recommended changes, we estimate the Postal Service could save $170.6 million over a 10-year period."

The Bechtel Group is the largest engineering company and third largest privately-owned company in America. Headquartered in San Francisco, they have about 50,000 employees working on projects in about 50 countries. Bechtel participated in the building of Hoover Dam in the 1930s. It was also involved in several other high profile construction engineering projects such as the Channel Tunnel, numerous power projects, refineries, nuclear power plants, BART, Jubail Industrial City, the King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, the Kingdom Centre and Tower in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong International Airport, the Boston Big Dig, the rebuilding of the infrastructure of Iraq funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the hauling and installing of more than 35,000 trailers and mobile homes for Hurricane Katrina victims in Mississippi.

Since 1989 Bechtel has contributed over $5.5 million to both Democratic (46%) and Republican (54%) political candidates, and since 1997 has invested over $1.1 million in lobbying. For that relatively modest amount of payola - and despite multiple instances of legal and regulatory violations documented in the POGO Federal Contractor Misconduct Database - they've been "awarded" more than $41.3 billion in defense and other government contracts since 2000, including over $3.9 billion from the Obama Administration just last year, and over $203 million from the Obama DOE just last month.

And how does Bechtel get (away with) so much for so little? Connections, that's how... Jane Mayer of The New Yorker wrote about the connections of Bechtel with the Bin Laden family, the Bush family, and administration officials: "The bin Ladens have a ten million dollar stake in the Fremont Group, a San Francisco-based company formerly called Bechtel Investments, which was until 1986 a subsidiary of Bechtel. The Fremont Group's website, which makes no mention of the bin Ladens, notes that 'though now independent, Fremont enjoys a close relationship with Bechtel.' Mayer further wrote, "One Fremont director, Riley Bechtel, is the chairman and chief executive officer of the Bechtel Group, and [was] a member of the Bush administration: he was appointed ... to serve on the President's Export Council. In addition, George P. Shultz, the Secretary of State in the Ronald Reagan Administration, [served] as a director both of Fremont and of the Bechtel Group, where he once was president..."

CorpWatch.org wrote in 2003, "Many Americans may be unaware of the connection between the Bechtel Corporation and the U.S.-led war in Iraq. Bechtel employees like George Shultz not only used their political influence to help bring this war about, but key Bechtel board members and employees with advisory positions to the Bush Administration helped ensure that Bechtel would receive one of the most lucrative contracts for rebuilding what they had helped to destroy. On April 17 [less than 30 days after the Iraqi War began on March 20] Bechtel received one of the first and largest of the rebuilding contracts in Iraq. Worth $680 million over 18 months, the contract [included] the rebuilding, repair and/or assessment of virtually every significant element of Iraq's infrastructure, from power generation facilities to electrical grids to the municipal water and sewage systems. The contract was granted in backroom deals without open and transparent bidding processes and the content remains hidden behind a veil of secrecy. The contract has not been publicly disclosed to American taxpayers..."

By 2007 those Iraqi reconstruction millions had blossomed into billions - for which a report by the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction revealed Bechtel failed to meet the contractual goals most of the time. It is alleged that some of the construction projects managed by Bechtel were either poorly implemented, failing within months of their installation, or designed in such a way that Iraqi engineers did not have the knowledge or components to fix Bechtel's proprietary technology.

This was not the first time the engineering giant proved to be a washout, especially with water systems: In September 1999, Bechtel signed a contract with Hugo Banzer, the elected president and former dictator of Bolivia, to privatize the water supply in Bolivia's third-largest city, Cochabamba. The contract was officially awarded to Aguas del Tunari, a consortium in which Bechtel held a 27.5 percent interest. Shortly thereafter, claims surfaced that water rates in that city went up an average of about 50 percent and that EVEN THE COLLECTION OF RAINWATER WAS MADE ILLEGAL as a result of the privatization contract. Both of these actions resulted in the Cochabamba protests of 2000. Many had to withdraw their children from school and stop using doctors because of higher costs for water. Martial law was declared, and Bolivian police killed at least 6 people and injured over 170 protesters. Amidst Bolivia's nationwide economic collapse and growing political unrest, the Bolivian government cancelled the water contract.

For Bechtel, it was just bad luck they didn't have any Bushbamas or Bin Ladens to go to bat for them in Bolivia...

Honeywell International is a Fortune 100 aviation, aerospace and defense conglomerate based in Morristown NJ. They manufacture flight safety and landing systems as well as jet engines, including engines for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) such as those used in our omnipresent CIA's MQ-9 Reaper (Predator B) drones. They also manufacture the "snoop drone" T-Hawk Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) featured in the video links below and soon to be deployed by a Big Brother/DHS-funded police force near you, but Honeywell has no monopoly on the boom in converting the Skynet-like technology America uses to kill civilians abroad for use in controlling the citizenry at home:

Honeywell is in the consortium that runs the "Pantex Plant" near Amarillo TX that assembles all of the nuclear bombs in the U.S. arsenal. Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies, successor to the defense products of AlliedSignal, operates the Kansas City Plant (where workers are currently on strike for safer working conditions) which produces and assembles 85 percent of the non-nuclear components of the bombs. Honeywell also makes automation and control equipment used in home and industrial heating, and car products such as Prestone and FRAM.

The Center for Responsive Politics classifies Honeywell as a "Heavy Hitter" in the Washington political payola department. Since 1999 they have made $9,762,160 in political contributions - 53% to Republicans, 47% to Democrats - including $54,060 to John McCain and $46,957 to Barack Obama. In addition, since 1997 they have invested over $52 million lobbying both sides of the aisle.

This makes Honeywell not only a "heavy hitter" but a "frequent offender", as are most of our Pentagon profiteers - Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Raytheon, et al. Honeywell's offenses include but are not limited to: mischarging the government, defective products, illegal storage of hazardous waste, unreported hazardous chemical releases, unauthorized chemical discharges, nuclear regulatory violations, labor law violations, patent infringement, copyright infringement, securities fraud, illegal monopolization, illegal exportation of chemicals, air quality violations, release of hazardous air pollutants, water quality violations, environmental quality violations, waste management violations, age discrimination, ADA and OSHA violations.

If your mind is media-managed like that of most Americans, hearing the name "Warren Buffett" immediately spawns images of a nice old man with a twinkle in his eye - and billions in the bank - who reminds you of your Grandpa (or the Grandpa you wish you had). Well, Warren Buffett is a "man" ... and he is 80 years "old" ... but he is NOT "nice". Check the facts: Warren Buffett is Chairman and CEO of the Fortune 500 conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway, but he had nothing to do with founding that company. Rather, he took it over so he could fire what may have been one of the last men to mess with him. It should also not go unmentioned that - given his $5 billion investment in Bank of America this past August - Buffet stood to pocket a pretty penny from their $5 debit card fees if BOA had not cowered and caved.

Through the companies and brands owned by Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett makes money off almost every American almost every day. I would wager that 90% of you reading this directly or indirectly contributed to the bottom line of more than one of Warren Buffett's companies more than once in the past 90 days:

The GEICO Gecko, the Fruit of the Loom guys, Dairy Queen's old-fashioned shaving bunnies, and yes even those four former General Re executives who just got their AIG-related fraud and conspiracy convictions overturned on a technicality are (or were) drummers and shills for Warren Buffett. Sensing mortality (or feeling guilty) perhaps, Buffett has made massive philanthropic moves in recent years. But I'd say his primary motivator is still greed - if not in the having, then at least in the getting. And like any winning chess player, Buffett thinks no more about sacrificing a pawn than he does about throwing dogs a bone. Just as he did here...

The following is a 14 August 2011 Op-Ed contribution by Warren Buffett to the New York Times. It is entitled "Stop Coddling the Super-Rich", but clearly conveys the message "Throw'em a Bone So We Can Keep What We Own!":

OUR leaders have asked for "shared sacrifice." But when they did the asking, they spared me. I checked with my mega-rich friends to learn what pain they were expecting. They, too, were left untouched.

While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks. Some of us are investment managers who earn billions from our daily labors but are allowed to classify our income as "carried interest," thereby getting a bargain 15 percent tax rate. Others own stock index futures for 10 minutes and have 60 percent of their gain taxed at 15 percent, as if they'd been long-term investors.

These and other blessings are showered upon us by legislators in Washington who feel compelled to protect us, much as if we were spotted owls or some other endangered species. It's nice to have friends in high places.

Last year my federal tax bill - the income tax I paid, as well as payroll taxes paid by me and on my behalf - was $6,938,744. That sounds like a lot of money. But what I paid was only 17.4 percent of my taxable income - and that's actually a lower percentage than was paid by any of the other 20 people in our office. Their tax burdens ranged from 33 percent to 41 percent and averaged 36 percent.

If you make money with money, as some of my super-rich friends do, your percentage may be a bit lower than mine. But if you earn money from a job, your percentage will surely exceed mine - most likely by a lot.

To understand why, you need to examine the sources of government revenue. Last year about 80 percent of these revenues came from personal income taxes and payroll taxes. The mega-rich pay income taxes at a rate of 15 percent on most of their earnings but pay practically nothing in payroll taxes. It's a different story for the middle class: typically, they fall into the 15 percent and 25 percent income tax brackets, and then are hit with heavy payroll taxes to boot.

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, tax rates for the rich were far higher, and my percentage rate was in the middle of the pack. According to a theory I sometimes hear, I should have thrown a fit and refused to invest because of the elevated tax rates on capital gains and dividends.

I didn't refuse, nor did others. I have worked with investors for 60 years and I have yet to see anyone - not even when capital gains rates were 39.9 percent in 1976-77 - shy away from a sensible investment because of the tax rate on the potential gain. People invest to make money, and potential taxes have never scared them off. And to those who argue that higher rates hurt job creation, I would note that a net of nearly 40 million jobs were added between 1980 and 2000. You know what's happened since then: lower tax rates and far lower job creation.

Since 1992, the I.R.S. has compiled data from the returns of the 400 Americans reporting the largest income. In 1992, the top 400 had aggregate taxable income of $16.9 billion and paid federal taxes of 29.2 percent on that sum. In 2008, the aggregate income of the highest 400 had soared to $90.9 billion - a staggering $227.4 million on average - but the rate paid had fallen to 21.5 percent.

The taxes I refer to here include only federal income tax, but you can be sure that any payroll tax for the 400 was inconsequential compared to income. In fact, 88 of the 400 in 2008 reported no wages at all, though every one of them reported capital gains. Some of my brethren may shun work but they all like to invest. (I can relate to that.)

I know well many of the mega-rich and, by and large, they are very decent people. They love America and appreciate the opportunity this country has given them. Many have joined the Giving Pledge, promising to give most of their wealth to philanthropy. Most wouldn't mind being told to pay more in taxes as well, particularly when so many of their fellow citizens are truly suffering.

Twelve members of Congress will soon take on the crucial job of rearranging our country's finances. They've been instructed to devise a plan that reduces the 10-year deficit by at least $1.5 trillion. It's vital, however, that they achieve far more than that. Americans are rapidly losing faith in the ability of Congress to deal with our country's fiscal problems. Only action that is immediate, real and very substantial will prevent that doubt from morphing into hopelessness. That feeling can create its own reality.

Job one for the 12 is to pare down some future promises that even a rich America can't fulfill. Big money must be saved here. The 12 should then turn to the issue of revenues. I would leave rates for 99.7 percent of taxpayers unchanged and continue the current 2-percentage-point reduction in the employee contribution to the payroll tax. This cut helps the poor and the middle class, who need every break they can get.

But for those making more than $1 million - there were 236,883 such households in 2009 - I would raise rates immediately on taxable income in excess of $1 million, including, of course, dividends and capital gains. And for those who make $10 million or more - there were 8,274 in 2009 - I would suggest an additional increase in rate.

My friends and I have been coddled long enough by a billionaire-friendly Congress. It's time for our government to get serious about shared sacrifice.

The semantically twisted soundbyte summary is that the USGLC exists to promote the use of "smart power" in "doing well and doing good". By "smart power", some say they mean formally integrating business development with the doubletalk of diplomacy and America's ever-present threat of death from above in setting and achieving foreign policy goals. "Doing well and doing good" is their Utopian - or perhaps Orwellian - suggestion that corporations involved in said "business development" might actually do well (make a profit) while doing good (not depleting resources, polluting the environment, killing or maiming the innocent, or ripping people off).

If only...

Procter & Gamble was no doubt inspired by the possibility of "doing well and doing good" when they met with their overseas competitor Unilever to discuss more eco-friendly packaging (doing good). But instead, the two soap kings conspired to use the enviromental initiative as a cover for a years-long price fixing cartel (doing well). In April 2011, European Union (EU) regulators slapped the pair with a $456 million fine for their collusion. Procter & Gamble's share was $306 million, which for PG amounts to less than 2 days' sales - a penalty hardly worth footnote mention in their financials:

THE DECLARATION OF DEPENDENCE

We have gathered at Wall Street, New York City, and on the streets of financial districts around the world, both real and symbolic, in our homes and in our hearts, in every continent on the Earth. We stand at the precipice of possible futures in peaceful assembly, seeking a new way.

Understanding that a democracy is a compass calibrated by the combination of its citizens, and a peaceful change of course the dearest test of the equality of its members, it is the duty of good citizens to be awakened in the times.

In these days of awakening, we recognize the excesses of unchecked capitalism and name them “injustice”. We see the exercise of democracy undermined by entrenchment; we see the benefit of democracy bent from the many to the few; we have seen whole nations shaped by profit motive, as corporate gain infuses and influences nearly every aspect of human life, from the intimacy of domestic detail to branches of government and the reasoning of law.

The living guts of a democracy are found in its will to self-correct. We have allowed the dehumanization of society to so build up around us, to box and minimize us, to hound us with fabricated need, that the majority of working men and women would take great and rightful joy in protesting these wrongs, but feel they cannot afford to.

Now we find planet Earth endangered.

By the million, insistent banners of infinite growth—a concept which is sustainable only in our lies— we have seen democracy become other than democracy. We recognize these shortcomings of capitalism as systemic, for nothing so endangers a society as its own success.

But if our awakening stops here, at the level of the political and the economic merely, it remains more a measure of sleep. There can be no true material gain lacking the understanding of our inherent, human connection to all materials.

We hereby declare our realization that the Earth is a sentient being.

We declare that the Earth and the humanity She yielded are bound to one another at depths that science cannot yet detect.

We declare that the human species is dependent upon the Earth, as a child upon her mother.

We declare that the understanding of this relationship supersedes the role of government and economic systems; that, logically, the first purpose of a government and its economy is to effect the best symbiosis of human beings with the Earth.

We declare that no government is just which leads humanity to a preventable extinction, and to the death of the planet; that no government is just which is not itself a good citizen of the larger, governing Earth.

We declare that the Earth and humanity are near enough to one; that we can no more shed our own evolution, or stand in sovereignty apart from our own existence, than we can continue to conduct our industries without first concern given to sustainable resources, holistic impact and plain necessity.

We may declare independence from a tyrannical king or some equally tyrannical, stale idea of the past, but there can be no independence from the planet in which the original flare and surge of life yet abides, in plants and animals, and in us, and all our works.

If that chrysalis day should arrive in which we make a second, sentient planet our home, it will come as proof that our living bond with Earth Mother was, in these days, preserved. Proof that we left the modern age for a newer age to come.

PepsiCo Inc. is a Fortune 500 global conglomerate with interests in the manufacturing, marketing and distribution of grain-based snack foods, beverages and other products. PepsiCo was formed in 1965 with the merger of the Pepsi-Cola Company and Frito-Lay, Inc. PepsiCo has since expanded from its namesake product Pepsi to a broader range of food and beverage brands, the largest of which include an acquisition of Tropicana in 1998 and a merger with Quaker Oats in 2001 - which added the Gatorade brand to its portfolio as well.

Since 1989 Pepsico has contributed more than $10 million to federal and state political campaigns, and since 1997 they have spent an additional $28 million on lobbying. Topping their politician recipient list is former Pennsylvania House Speaker John M. Perzel, the alleged mastermind of the $13 million "Computergate" scandal that pled guilty to corruption charges and is currently awaiting sentencing. Rick Perry comes in number two, with Ed Rendel, Barack Obama and George W. Bush rounding out the top five.

We don't know what Pepsico got from the money they gave to Perzel, but we do know at least one thing they are getting from their lobbying investment: So far, it has kept GMO warning labels off of their products.

"GMO" stands for "genetically modified organism", i.e. organisms whose genetic material has been artificially altered using genetic engineering techniques. The USA is the largest commercial grower of genetically modified crops in the world, and at least 75% percent of the processed foods consumed in America contain GMO ingredients.

GMOs are banned or significantly restricted in 30 other countries around the world, including Australia, Japan and all of the nations in the European Union. But here in the Corporate States of America, consumers aren't even given the benefit of GMO warning labels so they can decide for themselves if a risk exists and whether they are willing to accept it. To make matters worse, IN AMERICA IT IS LEGAL TO LABEL FOOD PRODUCTS AS "NATURAL" EVEN IF THEY CONTAIN GMO. And why are things that way? Because profit-before-principle corporations like Pepsico - working through co-opted and false fronts like the Organic Trade Association (OTA) - lobby to keep them that way:

"General Mills (currently represented on the OTA board by Craig Weakly of Small Planet Foods), H.J. Heinz Co. (invested in the Hain-Celestial Group), PepsiCo (Tropicana and Quaker produce a few organic products), and Kellogg's (owns Kashi), joined a coalition of corporate giants - the "Coalition Against the Costly Labeling Law" - including chemical makers Monsanto and DuPont, agribusiness ConAgra, food processor Sara Lee, the pesticide lobbying group CropLife and the junk food lobbying group the Grocery Manufacturers Association, in spending some $5.5 million to defeat mandatory GMO labels."

With 2010 revenues of $108.7 billion and earnings of $1.2 billion, McKesson Corporation ranks #15 on the Fortune 500. It is the nation's largest healthcare provider, with pharmaceuticals distribution being the backbone of the company: One-third of all medicines used in the U.S. run through the McKesson pipeline. The company is also the dominant player in healthcare information systems, as more than 70% of our major hospitals use its technology to digitize prescriptions and patient medical records.

McKesson is also one of the U.S. government's largest contractors with billions in federal contracts awarded annually, over $4.6 billion in 2010 alone. It also ranks high in the POGO (Project On Government Oversight) Federal Contractor Misconduct Database (FCMD), with 14 documented instances of misconduct totalling more than $1.3 billion.

Aside from a history of securities fraud beginning with the infamous McKesson-Robbins scandal of 1938 to their more recent McKessonHBOC debacle, the focus of McKesson's white-collar criminal activity is the manipulation of prices paid for pharmaceuticals. As they compete with the CIA for the "America's Drug Dealer" moniker, obviously the more they charge for each prescription that moves through their pipeline the more money they make. Here's a judge's description of how one of their recent schemes worked:

"Beginning in 2001, FDB and McKesson reached a secret agreement to raise the markup between WAC (wholesale average cost)and AWP (average wholesale price) from its standard 20% to 25% for over four hundred drugs. ... McKesson communicated these new 25% WAC to AWP markups to FDB, which then published AWPs with the new markup... McKesson has estimated that by 2002, 95% of all prescription drug manufacturers used the inflated 25% markup, and by 2004, 99% of all prescription drug manufacturers did so. ... The scheme ended on March 15, 2005, when FDB told its customers that it would 'no longer survey drug wholesalers for information relating to' AWP. The scheme resulted in higher profits for retail pharmacies that purchase drugs on the basis of WAC but are reimbursed on the basis of AWP, a differential called 'the spread'. ... McKesson implemented the scheme in order to provide a greater 'spread' to important retail pharmacy clients like Rite Aid as well as to its own pharmacy related businesses."

Nobody went to jail over this, but thanks to a class-action lawsuit McKesson was forced to pay a $350 million penalty:

"The prices of about 1,400 branded drugs are about to get a little cheaper because of a $352.7 million class action settlement with wholesale drug distributor McKesson... In addition to the payment, the prices of 1,442 medicines will be lowered by 4 percent, according to a federal court ruling... The court-approved deal wraps up a lengthy case in which McKesson and First Databank were accused of engaging in a 'racketeering enterprise to fraudulently increase the published 'average wholesale price' ('AWP') of over four hundred branded drugs by five percent from late 2001 to 2005,' Judge Patti Saris wrote. MediSpan published the same false prices... Affected drugs include Lipitor, Claritin, Prozac, Nexium, Plavix, Allegra, Wellbutrin, Ambien, Prilosec, Zantac, Valtrex, Zyprexa, Celebrex, Imitrex, Risperdal, Seroquel, and Neurontin."

In April 2011 the U.S. Supreme Court decision in the "AT&T Mobility v. Concepcion" case made it easy for corporations to shield themselves from class action lawsuits like this going forward. But even if that shield is taken away, McKesson has an ample $442 million litigation reserve set aside so they can continue to focus on profits regardless of propriety:

With 2010 revenues of $67.8 billion and profits of $8.2 billion, Pfizer Inc. ranks #31 on the Fortune 500 and is the world's largest pharmaceuticals corporation. Brand names include Viagra, Celebrex, Norvasc, and Lipitor. The company also manufactures animal care products such as Revolution, an anti-parasitic. In 2009, Pfizer acquired its rival Wyeth for 68 billion dollars. Wyeth's over the counter brands included Advil, Centrum, Robitussin and ChapStick. The majority of its sales are conducted through the wholesale companies McKesson and Cardinal Health. Here is a complete listing of the Pfizer's products:

Since 1989 Pfizer has contributed over $21 million to federal and state politicians, with George W. Bush and Barack Obama being the top recipients. And since 1999 the company has spent more than $105 million in lobbying on issues that have more to do with Pfizer's wealth than America's health.

In return for their political payola and lobbying investment, Pfizer has been awarded over $5 billion in U.S. government contracts over the past few years, mostly for drugs ordered by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs:

At the same time Uncle Sam was handing billions of your tax dollars over to Pfizer, he was spending millions more investigating their illegal activities. As reported by the New York Times on 3 September 2009...

"The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer agreed to pay $2.3 billion to settle civil and criminal allegations that it had illegally marketed its painkiller Bextra, which has been withdrawn. It was the largest health care fraud settlement and the largest criminal fine of any kind ever... It was Pfizer's fourth settlement over illegal marketing activities since 2002... The government charged that executives and sales representatives throughout Pfizer's ranks planned and executed schemes to illegally market not only Bextra but also Geodon, an antipsychotic; Zyvox, an antibiotic; and Lyrica, which treats nerve pain. While the government said the fine was a record sum, the $2.3 billion fine amounts to less than three weeks of Pfizer's sales. Much of the activities cited Wednesday occurred while Pfizer was in the midst of resolving allegations that it illegally marketed Neurontin, an epilepsy drug for which the company in 2004 paid a $430 million fine and signed a corporate integrity agreement - a companywide promise to behave. John Kopchinski, a former Pfizer sales representative whose complaint helped prompt the government's Bextra case, said that company managers told him and others to dismiss concerns about the Neurontin case while pushing them to undertake similar illegal efforts on behalf of Bextra. 'The whole culture of Pfizer is driven by sales, and if you didn't sell drugs illegally, you were not seen as a team player,' said Mr. Kopchinski, whose personal share of the Pfizer settlement is expected to exceed $50 million. Mr. Kopchinski left Pfizer in 2003. Altogether, six whistle-blowers will collect $102 million from the federal share of the settlement and more from states' shares. Forty-nine states and the District of Columbia will collect $331 million, with New York State alone getting $66 million. Only South Carolina chose not to participate in the settlement... As news of the riches earned by whistle-blowers spread through the industry in recent years, scores of fraud cases have been filed by former drug sales representatives using a Civil War-era law that pays a bounty for fraud alerts. The cases charge that illegal drug marketing cost the federal Medicare and Medicaid program millions."

"Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen's Health Research Group, said the Pfizer settlement 'may sound large, but it's not enough to ensure drug companies will curb their bad behavior.' Wolfe pointed out that the Pfizer agreement topped a landmark settlement set by Eli Lilly in January, when that company paid more than $500 million in criminal penalties for improper marketing of the antipsychotic drug Zyprexa. Five other major drug manufacturers logged smaller settlements over the past decade... 'The U.S. pharmaceutical industry, long one of the most profitable in the country, with profits last year of close to $50 billion, has engaged in an unprecedented amount of criminal activity in the past decade,' Wolfe said. 'Unfortunately, the ever-escalating fines are unlikely to stop drug companies from continuing to bribe doctors because they represent just a fraction of drug company profits and no one has gone to jail.'"
