Fannie, Freddie executives score $100M payday post bailout

Mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac received the biggest federal bailout of the financial crisis. And nearly $100 million of those tax dollars went to lucrative pay packages for top executives, filings show.

The top five executives at Fannie Mae received $33.3 million in 2009 and 2010, while the top five at Freddie Mac received $28.1 million. And each company has set pay targets of as much as $17 million for its top managers for 2011.

That's a total of $95.4 million, which will essentially be coming from taxpayers, who have been keeping the mortgage finance giants alive with regular quarterly cash infusions since the Federal Home Finance Agency (FHFA) took control of the companies in September 2008.

Fannie CEO Michael Williams and Freddie CEO Charles Halderman, each received about $5.5 million in pay for last year, and they could receive more when their final deferred compensation for 2010 is set. All the executives receive a significant portion of their pay in the year or years after they earn it.

The CEOs' pay targets for 2011 are about $6 million a piece, though Halderman might not get much of that money since he's announced plans to leave Freddie sometime in 2012. He must still be at the company in order to receive the deferred compensation. His base pay for 2011 is $900,000, with most of the rest of his compensation coming in deferred payments.

The salary filings were all made by the companies in early 2011, but received relatively little attention until a recent report by Politico, the political news Web site, which highlighted about $12.8 million in bonuses the executives received for last year.

That published report sparked a political firestorm on Capitol Hill that could lead to legislation to put strict limits on pay at the two firms. But it only told part of the story. The full extent of salary, deferred pay and bonuses are only found in the filings.

Rep. Spencer Bachus, the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, has scheduled a vote in his committee Tuesday on his own legislation that would suspend the compensation packages of top executives at the firms.

"The fact that the top executives of these failed companies are receiving multi-million dollar pay packages, plus millions more in bonuses, is an added insult to the taxpayers who are forced to foot the bill," Bachus said in a statement announcing plans to hold the vote.

The Democrat-controlled Senate Banking Committee also plans to hold a hearing on the matter on Tuesday. Additionally, the Republican-controlled House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is set to call Edward DeMarco, the acting director of FHFA, and the CEOs of the two firms, to a hearing on the pay packages on Wednesday.

Sixty senators from both parties have already sent a letter to DeMarco asking that he change the compensation policy of the two companies. FHFA has final say on pay at the two companies.

"The idea that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which rely on taxpayer funding to stay afloat, must offer excessive bonuses to its executives to attract effective management strains credulity," the letter said.

DeMarco responded to the senators saying that the executives who were running the companies in 2008 when the problems occurred have left without any golden parachutes, and that effective management is needed to make sure that taxpayer losses at the firms do not rise and the companies continue to function. He said current executive pay at the firm is about 40% less than before the bailouts.

"I need to ensure that the companies have people with the skills needed to manage the credit and interest rate risks of $5 trillion worth of mortgage assets and $1 trillion of annual new business that the American taxpayer is supporting," he wrote.

Spokespeople for Fannie and Freddie declined to comment ahead of the hearings.

The latest cost estimate from FHFA is that the two bailouts will end up with a net cost to taxpayers of about $124 billion through 2014, though that figure could rise as high as $193 billion. Even the lower cost estimate will make it the most expensive bailout of the financial crisis -- far more costly than bailing out the nation's banks or automakers.

The CEOs and the other top executives at Fannie and Freddie get all their pay in cash, and none of it in company stock , which is generally deemed worthless.

The company filings that disclosed the pay back in February also defended the pay based on the work they had done.

Fannie's filing said that under Williams' leadership, the company "made solid progress in managing credit losses on its pre-2009 book of business, acquired a 2010 book of business with a strong credit profile that is expected to be profitable, and achieved substantial progress in making the company more operationally disciplined and efficient."

An investigation into Goldman Sachs has revealed a whole new level of greed and corruption taking place on Wall Street.

Back in 2008, the investment bank Goldman Sachs was magically turned into a commercial bank, within 24 hours, so they could qualify for $10 billion in bailout funds. Part of the deal was an agreement that they would be subject to the Community Reinvestment Act and return some of that money back into low-income community banks.
Since Goldman doesn’t have any branches (because they are in reality an investment firm), they agreed to give money to the designated low-income bank of New York, Lower East Side People’s Federal Credit Union. These payments are not donations. They are required payments under the law as part of the deal they agreed to in return for the $10 billion in taxpayer funded bailout money they received in 2008.

Proving that no good deed goes unpunished, Goldman Sachs has begun to use these payments as a political weapon to control the political discussion.
The Lower East Side People’s Federal Credit Union became the bank of choice for the Occupy Wall Street movement's increasing donation funds. The tiny credit union has come out in support of Movement, since for them its about moving individual's money from the big banks to the small banks.
Well Goldman got news of this and responded with legal threats saying, you cannot—if you’re going to get our money, you may not back Occupy Wall Street and the "move your money" movement, without getting approval from us at Goldman Sachs.
This is a whole new level of corruption and it’s very dangerous because it involves billions of dollars in public money. It’s not Goldman’s money. It’s our money. And this is what they’re doing with it.

What else explains so many media blackouts and helicopter groundings, or re fueling at coincidental times around the country ? Of national news stations? They can be in war zones, but not peaceful protest at home ? Why did Naomi Wolfe said Homeland security and the FBI were there weeks ago? How on earth was there any danger to the news helicopters last night ? Anybody? We can televise a war in Iraq, but not a raid of a peaceful protest in a park ? Really? Who has the power to make those calls? I guess Bloomberg was monitoring the fuel of the choppers in Oakland too. The more important question now becomes does any mayor have unrestricted power to block national news organizations, and free press at will? Is It money? Or the Government? Or both? Either way the press is not free anymore. I think this points towards a federal power.

Mayor Bloomberg: Be Responsible and Fight Terrorism, DO NOT USE IT FOR YOUR OWN PURPOSES

I just watched a horrible act by Michael Bloomberg on CNN. He held a huge press conference about an incident that was not a threat. It was simply a lone wolf that had been caught - he posed no threat. It was obvious that the Mayor was simply using this incident as a Public Service Announcement for the NYPD.

It is certainly true that the NYPD has done a very good job in the fight against terrorism and that there are many heroes within the NYPD. On the other hand, it is also true that the NYPD has behaved in a brutal and unconscionable manner (similar to Mubaruk and Ghadafi) against the occupy demonstrators.

It is clear that the Mayor tried to use terrorism for his own advantage tonight; in an effort to remind the people of the ever present fear of terrorism so that he could use this "fear" to serve his own self-serving goals toward the occupiers.

Bloomberg: Neither the people of New York nor the visitors to New York need you to remind us of the ever present terrorist threat. We are not stupid. We can see right through you. You, just as Bush and Cheney have used terrorism to serve as an aid for the achievement of your own goals. Such actions are little better than the terrorists themselves.

FDR once said, "there is nothing to fear, but fear itself." That is somewhat true (when it comes to Bloomberg's tactics). However, we should also fear terrorism; those who use terrorism (and the accompanying fear) for their own goals AND Mayor Bloomberg's use of the NYPD for harrassment of those who are trying to exercise their basic human and constitutional rights.

Mayor Bloomberg, next time, show us a picture of a pipe bomb; congratulate the police department; then get off our television sets so we can watch important shows like 60 Minutes.... And, Mayor; start doing your job....

Our political philosophy includes a number of values that are shared by classical liberal and neo-liberal political philosophies as well as socialist political philosophies. We are not a revolutionary, but think in terms of gradualism…social democracy at best, Punctuated Equilibrium at least. In some respects We recognize conservative tendencies in Our separate political philosophies as well, though My affinities lie primarily with the former, based on my preference for a human value that esteems cooperation over competition. I dare say that Nature herself demonstrates better this cooperative principle, and more thoroughly, than the competitive model.

In the following paper We will begin by stating the most distinguishing characteristics of those ideas representing what I think the best society looks like under a true, holistic definition of social justice; rationale for those ideas, and along the way a few observations of critical differences in Our socio-political values and the few schools of thought that differ in some way from Our own. Our aim is to stick to those ideas We enthusiastically hold to while recognizing how they differ from classical liberalism, conservatism, and socialism in their broadest definitions.

One further clarifying preface to the following essay seems necessary. We am choosing to concentrate in this paper on opposition to free market capitalism, the primacy of negative rights and the harmful effects of the current system and of the limited form of government in our society; which largely shapes my socio-political values. In this respect, Our political philosophy is driven by moral arguments and the concept of a just society, by which I shall strive to justify the application of positive rights in answer to our current inequality of wealth in society.

One’s conception of a just society turns on a discussion of rights and responsibilities that members of society do or must possess. It appears that freedom cannot be well defined negatively only, nor even principally, in our current socio-political condition; that while the necessary condition of a free society is the possession of the negative rights of individuals from harm by other members, this negative conception of rights is not sufficient for the preservation of society where it may produce inequalities of outcome that arise from the unregulated exercise of freedom in the first instance, often and more certainly these days contrived by politicians in cahoots with the wealthy elite.

Our assertion is that the emphasis in our definition of justice upon negative rights to date has given rise to the abuse of human rights in the round, effectively depriving social justice in our economic systems and social organizations. One can conclude thereby that American society is fundamentally unjust, do to this emphasis and the consequent plunder which allegiances of corrupt interests have pursued with the nod of this particular emphasis on negative rights and the primacy of private property defining a free society. To say that the People should be “free” to starve, waste away and die from disease and neglect, and to live in ignorance, depravity and superstition is to demonstrate that the conversation is not really about freedom, but about Power; and the powerful want most to have their own freedom to do as they please, in their interests, quite apart from the Peoples’, whom they ignore, deride, mock, contemn and enslave.

This deviously misguided emphasis on negative rights takes for its value the proposition that individuals are the most important elements in society, that the individual owes nothing more to society than restraint of their actions in consideration of the equal exercise of other’s free determinations (a reasonable notion turned on its head by declaring corporations “People”), and a kind of “do not harm” concept of rights that supposedly constitutes our freedom and for which our children, brothers, sisters, fathers, husbands and wives are still asked to sacrifice blood, sweat, tears and life.

The other side of this coin is that society owes its members nothing but the freedom from the interference of others in the exercise of their own free and lawful determinations. Classical liberalism and conservatism share in common this emphasis on natural, negative rights of individuals, the right to our “human nature” and those capacities of our nature that affords us our free determinations, with our capacity for rational choice being among the most important of those capacities. But the autonomy of the individual is the principle value, and one’s right to be free from harm by others and from the interference of their private welfare and interests by the government (taxation, regulations of various importance) is their emphasis, not the positive right to the benefits derived from cooperation in society. These are minimal, what conservatives might laud as essentialist, conceptions of the role of government, which to Our way of thinking leads to great inequalities of outcome and opportunity that do not directly relate to the meretricious effect of individual efforts in the exercise of their, supposed, negative freedom. The obvious shortcoming here on this emphasis on negative rights involves an accounting for the many negative externalities in the exercise of negative rights, which interfere with what must be, at least, equally important positive rights.

So, social democracy best answers to the broader notion of social justice and that such a social, political organization of society would best support the greater responsibility of all members for maintaining and furthering the general welfare, and thus the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Today We have arrived at a place where, without this emphasis, Our general welfare has been put gravely at risk. It may not be so much that these other philosophies deny the importance of general welfare; we may allow, in principle, quite the contrary. They emphasize the absolute right, and necessity, of the individual for securing their needs and wants. But the votaries of negative rights alone conceive that society, or the collective, has no responsibility to the individual outside of granting, perhaps securing, these same negative rights. Their assumptions lie in how the general welfare is affected and their distinction between private and public responsibilities to the affecting of that end; and it is clearly mistaken, wrong-headed, even diabolical at the extreme (think Wall Street).

The results of such assumption on the primacy of individual, negative rights and the exercise of those rights as the most powerful cause of the general welfare, as an economic scheme, has virtually condoned a wide disparity in the distribution of wealth in society, which they would account as both good, natural, and preferable, even as just. We can no longer share that assumption, nor do We think that the facts bear out the rationale of that assumption, however strong it may seem. We are still waiting for the “trickle down” benefit of this assumption, in fact, even after several decade. If we gave positive rights equal weight, we could reverse this process; and there is a moral imperative to do so.

It is Our sense that social justice should be the principal aim of a healthy (viable, sustainable), society without which freedom is reduced to a mere slogan or as a prop to the privileged and advantaged among us, whose advantages are not chiefly natural but increasingly, perhaps largely, the effect of political organization and economic policy, one that holds too absolutely to the right of property concept that drives these political philosophies (classical liberalism, conservatism). Members of society are left to be “free” to die of neglect or waste away in the forgotten corners of poverty, made to suffer inhuman outrages because of a value system that does not adequately regard social justice. At bottom, We perceive these value systems to conflict with the interests of the People in terms of the viable society and of justice; for them it hinges on a vulgar individualism, society being nothing more than the sum of individuals, while for Us it hinges on the collective welfare of society, morally, economically, affectively, much more than the sum of the parts and possessing that much more moral responsibility to the members. We understand these to be different value systems, not merely differences in reasonably argued political philosophies.

Whether a society is just depends upon the shared rights and responsibilities among the members of society in support of the general welfare and the maintenance of those rights and responsibilities by all members. There can be no sharp distinction between negative and positive rights under the aegis of social justice, so conceived. One involves the other as cause to effect, and to deny the application of positive rights under our capitalist system is to invite the collapse of negative rights in terms of the legitimacy of the current free-market regime. Put another way, the emphasis on negative rights to the exclusion of positive rights, is the cause of the great disparity of wealth in this system and which supports the charge of social injustice against this system. The weight of such injustice has become so great that it threatens the viability of the system itself. We hope to clarify this interdependency...continued....

You thought, perhaps, that there was nothing fresh left to write about the Holocaust. Think, sadly, again. Edwin Black, a dedicated, even driven, researcher, has a new charge sheet to present. It shows, in compelling detail, that IBM, 'the solutions company', was also the company of the Final Solution.

How did Hitler, from 1933 on, find, herd and exterminate millions of his Jewish victims with such sickening precision? Easy. IBM, through its German subsidiary, Dehomag, ran his censuses and surveys on its unique punch-card tabulators. It provided the vital infrastructure for persecution and the the silence of the gas chambers. What is more, it knew exactly what it was doing.

Thomas Watson, the chief executive who built one of America's greatest international enterprises, did not receive the Merit Cross of the German Eagle for nothing, but for services knowingly rendered. Watson is the villain of this piece. He was a classic American success story, the sewing-machine salesman who became corporate emperor, president of the International Chamber of Commerce and chum of FDR, but also a covert admirer of the Third Reich who peddled his hanging chads with fawning eagerness.

There is no scope for doubt. Black has a relentless flow of memos, letters and speeches. When Watson wrote in 1937 (long after his punch cards had begun their whirring work) that the world 'must extend a sympathetic understanding to the German people and their aims under the leadership of Adolf Hitler', he had the clearest knowledge of what those aims entailed.

His fractious underling at the Dehomag subsidiary put it yet more chillingly: 'We are very much like physicians,' he told his Nazi audience, 'in that we dissect, cell by cell, the German cultural body... these are not dead little cards; quite to the contrary, they prove later on that they come to life when they are sorted at 25,000 an hour according to certain characteristics.'

As the war took hold, Watson found himself trapped between a PR rock and a ruthless hard place. He sent his medal back and disavowed his German clients, but he still kept the tabulators turning, still gathered the profits, was still on hand as the conflict ended to turn Dehomag into IBM Germany and go marching on. That, in a sense, is all you need to know. It is a distinctive contribution to the history of the time. It wholly justifies Black's years of toil. At such a distance, however, the reader inevitably looks for understanding beyond the damning facts, for a more contemporary relevance to set multinational America wriggling uneasily in its chair. Such parallels are easy enough to construct.

'Watson was no fascist. He was pure capitalist. But the horseshoe of political economics finds little distance between extremities. Accretion of wealth by and for the state under a strong autocratic leader fortified by jingoism and hero-worship was appealing to Watson. After all, his followers wore uniforms, sang songs and were expected to display unquestioned loyalty to the company he led.'...

White House Internet petition for new 9/11 investigation

A petition has been set up on the White House's website calling for a new investigation of the events of 9/11 by an independent prosecutor. (The petition can be found at http://wh.gov/b1N . Complete text of the petition is below.) Petitioning the White House directly is a new tool to empower more direct input to the government. While internet-based petitions are certainly not new, it is new for the White House and it has a benefit that no other online petition can claim. If enough signatures are collected (25,000), the website rules state that there will be an official response from the appropriate agency emailed to every signer. That is something no other internet petition can even come close to doing.

On the down side completing the petitioning process is not easy. First, in order to sign a petition, people must complete the account set up process at the White House website (www.whitehouse.gov). Setting up an account requires a name, zip code, and email address. And the email address must be verified (by successfully receiving and responding to an email from the WhiteHouse.gov website) before the account set up is complete. Petition signers are not directly identified on the website, however, each signer's first name, date signing, and city are shown in the signer list.

The second hurtle is that when a petition is first set up it cannot be found by using the petition search routine on WhiteHouse.gov. This remains true until 150 people have signed the petition. The only way a petition can be reached before the 150-signer minimum is to use a URL set up for that specific petition (in this case http://wh.gov/b1N ). Signing the petition requires getting the petition-specific URL from someone in your circle of email contacts or through notices on websites like this one.

The final hurdle is that signing must be done relatively quickly. This petition--established on October 31st--must reach the 25,000 signature minimum required for a formal response from the government by November the 30th, a little more than 3 weeks from today. This isn't impossible. For example, other causes, like a petition to recreate the legal wall between investing and banking (17,000+ signatures), have gathered a substantial number of signatures. And the short time frame means that once a petition gets to the searchable stage it is only competing with a relatively small number of other petitions (132 at this writing).

As frustrating as it can be to attempt to bring a factual approach to understanding what happened on 9/11 over the last 10 years, the small step described here is a real one that you can accomplish today. You have within your personal grasp the potential to bring pressure on the government (however small) and potential visibility to this cause. For all the effort that has been made to bring a rational approach to 9/11, please consider one more small effort and sign the petition today. Then multiply your effectiveness by passing the link on to anyone else in your email circle who might care about knowing the truth about 9/11.

Citi Group and JPMorgan Chase (both currently or previously run by Jamie Dimon) are the financial arm of a global organized crime network (lookup “shadow banking” system). Both use their “private client” services to covertly move and hide money that some of the world’s worst tyrants have pillaged from their countries. Both are involved in laundering money for organized crime (drug cartels; slavery; sex industry), and both have been linked to facilitating funds transfers to the very terrorist groups that have avowed to kill U.S. citizens and service personnel.

If you work for these companies, or in any way support them with your money, then you are part of the conspiracy of evil too.

We the American people control whether the bloated and corrupt banks will survive. They can not exist without our money.

On November 5, 2011, demonstrate this fact to them. Take all of your money out of Bank of America, Citi Bank, Chase Bank, Wells Fargo, and/or US Bank, and transfer the funds to accounts at either an independent community bank or a credit union.

Refuse to give these 5 big banks any money…. don’t use their credit or debit cards; withhold loan interest and fees (if possible, move your loans elsewhere too). Without a constant flow of consumer revenue, they pretty much can’t operate and survive for more than 75 days.

On November 5, shut off the source of their profits and strangle them into submission.
